About Kim Bartosch & The Brave Bookshelf

Hi, I’m Kim Bartosch. I’m a young adult author who writes paranormal mysteries and thrillers, including my debut novel Ask the Girl (Woodhall Press, 2022). I’ve always loved a good ghost story, and I’ve even tagged along on paranormal investigations. I’m also a mom, an ESL teacher, ABA Behavior Tech, and a book reviewer.

I started The Brave Bookshelf because I believe stories can help kids and teens talk about real life — bullying, grief, mental health, identity, friendship, and feeling different. I review children’s, middle grade, and YA books that open up those conversations. When I can’t find a book on a topic that matters, I write one.

Before this Substack, I ran:

  • Kim’s Book Reviews & Writing Aha’s, where I posted book reviews, giveaways, interviews, and writing advice for authors.

  • kimbartosch.com, my author site with blog posts, workshops, and school visit info.

Instead of keeping everything separate — website here, blog there, newsletter somewhere else — I’ve brought it all together in one place. This Substack now includes:

  • The Brave Bookshelf (books that talk about tough topics)

  • Book reviews & Writing Aha’s (my reviews and writing tips)

  • Author updates (events, releases, workshops, school visits)

Along with writing, I’m an advocate for better support for kids and families living with autism and mental health struggles. I’ve supported organizations like DBSA and groups focused on autism resources because I believe families shouldn’t have to fight alone to access help.

Thank you for being here, reading, sharing, and caring about the stories that shape young readers.

— Kim
