1. Tell us about yourself and how you became a writer.

I have been a physician since 2013 and became a mother in 2018 while still in training. I soon realized that many physician mothers were in the same situation, balancing demanding medical careers while raising children. I turned to writing to share my experiences and to help families navigate the highs and lows of parenting while working in healthcare.

2. Where did you get the idea for MOMMY IS HERE! AFTER A LONG DAY AT THE HOSPITAL?

My son was the inspiration for the book. When he started daycare, he began noticing when I left for work and asked questions like, “Why do you have to go?” and “What do you do there?” These moments sparked conversations that made me reflect on my roles as both a physician and a mother.

Your Writing Process

3. How long did it take you to write and illustrate MOMMY IS HERE! AFTER A LONG DAY AT THE HOSPITAL?

The idea first came to me around 2020 after the pandemic, but I decided to make it happen in early 2025. I started drafting the rhyming text, and my husband began creating the characters. By May 2025 we had a complete sketch draft, and by July 2025 we held our first printed copy in our hands.

4. Why did you choose to write a children’s book? Do you have any tips or advice to give someone who decides to write a children’s book?

Children’s books are a wonderful way to spark curiosity, imagination, and conversation with our kids. They are also one of the most meaningful ways to connect emotionally. My advice to aspiring children’s authors is to start as soon as inspiration strikes. Even a few lines or quick sketches on a napkin can take you far. Do not let your idea fade before you begin.

5. What were the challenges you faced in writing your book? How did you overcome it?

Finding time to write has been my biggest challenge as a full-time physician and mother of two toddlers. We actually took vacation time to work on our book and learned that even small steps made during short breaks eventually add up to big progress.

Your Road to Publication

7. So are you Self-Published, Hybrid Published or Traditionally Published? Why did you choose this route of publication?

I am self-published. After researching various options, I decided this route offered the most flexibility. It allows us to work at our own pace without being tied to someone else’s schedule or deadlines.

8. What tips, tricks, or secrets can you give a person about the type of publishing (self, hybrid, traditional) you did?

High-quality printing is a priority for children’s books, but it is important to balance that with cost. We explored several platforms to develop a distribution strategy and found that some offer author copies at lower prices with the same quality. We use those copies for book signing events so we can offer families a discount.

9. If you’re self-published, how did you find your illustrator? Do you share the royalties with the illustrator or did you agree to a flat fee?

My husband illustrated the book. As a physician with a busy schedule, he used digital design tools to help speed up the creative process while keeping our vision consistent.

Marketing

9. How do you market your book? Did you have a marketing plan? If so, what is it?

Did you have a publicist? Tell us the route you took in marketing your book and series.

Yes, we are working with a publicist who specializes in children’s books. We started locally with small reading sessions and author events, and our next focus is visiting hospitals to connect directly with healthcare families. Next year, we plan to expand through collaborations with medical organizations and hospital events.

11. I have several picture book writers who follow my blog and are looking for inspiration and publication. What advice or inspiration could you give these writers?

The best inspiration often comes at bedtime after a long day. Think about what you would like to tell your child or what you would have loved to read as a child yourself. Those are usually the stories that connect the deepest.

When I first held my debut book in my hands, Ask the Girl, I thought the hardest part was over. (Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.) Writing the book was only half the battle—getting it seen was the real quest. As an author published by a small press, I quickly discovered that marketing isn’t just about luck or algorithms—it’s about strategy, persistence, and connecting with readers who genuinely care about your story.

Book reviews became my lifeline. They built credibility, boosted visibility, and—most importantly—helped my book reach readers I’d never have found on my own. But figuring out how to get those reviews? That took trial, error, and a lot of coffee-fueled research. Over time, I turned that learning curve into a blueprint not just for promoting my own work, but for building the foundation of my authorpreneurship—treating writing as both art and business.

If you’ve ever wondered how to land solid book reviews without losing your sanity (or your entire marketing budget), you’re in the right place. Whether you’re self-published, indie-published, or with a small press like mine, these next ten steps will help you attract meaningful, authentic reviews and give your book the boost it deserves.

Let’s dive into the 10 essential steps for landing book reviews to boost your sales—because your words deserve to be read, talked about, and celebrated.

(Please note, as of 1/1/2026, I’ve had to raise my review fee to $50 due to inflation and other expenses.)

1. Know Your Genre and Audience

Before you dive into the world of book reviews, you need to know exactly where your book fits. Understanding your genre is crucial because it determines where and how you should seek reviews. Is your book a chilling ghost story, a heartwarming romance, a gripping YA fantasy, or a middle-grade adventure? Identifying this helps you target the right reviewers who are genuinely interested in your book’s genre. Reviewers who align with your genre will provide more insightful and relevant feedback, which is more likely to resonate with potential readers.

2. Research Potential Reviewers

Not all reviewers are created equal, and finding the right ones requires a bit of detective work. Start by making a list of potential reviewers who specialize in your genre. You can find them through book blogs, Instagram bookstagrammers, Goodreads reviewers, and even YouTube booktubers. Look for those who have reviewed similar books and have a following that matches your target audience. The best way to do this research is hashtags, such as #romance #fantasy #middlegrade #YA / #youngadult on these social media sites.

It’s also important to consider the quality of the reviews they provide. Are they detailed and thoughtful, or are they more surface-level summaries? You want reviewers who can provide meaningful critiques, as these reviews will be more valuable to readers.

3. Check Their Review Policies

Every reviewer has different guidelines and preferences, and respecting these is key to building a good relationship. Most reviewers have a review policy posted on their blog or website. This policy outlines what genres they accept, their preferred book formats (e.g., physical copy, eBook, or audiobook), and how they prefer to be contacted. Make sure you read and follow these guidelines carefully. Ignoring a reviewer’s stated preferences can lead to your request being ignored or, worse, leaving a negative impression. 4. Craft a Personal and Professional Request

When reaching out to reviewers, a generic, copy-pasted message won’t cut it. Personalization is crucial. Start your message by addressing the reviewer by name and mentioning something specific you appreciate about their reviews. Perhaps you loved their take on a book similar to yours or enjoyed their insights into a particular genre.

In your pitch, include a brief synopsis of your book, why you think it would be a good fit for their review style, and any relevant information, such as publication dates or accolades. Keep it professional but warm. Reviewers are more likely to respond positively to authors who come across as genuine and considerate.

5. Be Ready with a Review Copy of the Book

If a reviewer agrees to read your book, be prepared to send them a review copy promptly. Depending on the reviewer’s preference, this could be a physical book, an eBook, or an audiobook. Being flexible with formats can increase the chances of your book being reviewed. Remember, this is an investment in your book’s success, so consider the cost of sending review copies as part of your marketing budget.

Be prepared to pay for a book review. I currently charge $25, which includes reviews on my blog, Amazon profile, Goodreads, and social media. While some reviewers may offer reviews in exchange for a free book, more established blogs and social media influencers often charge a fee to review and feature your book. Be mindful of your marketing budget, and always do thorough research on the blogger or influencer before sending any money.

Keep in mind that some reviewers have separate fees for reading the book and writing the review. This is especially common with larger, more established review sites that have significant influence. If this is beyond your budget, consider targeting mid-sized reviewers who have a broad audience but don’t yet charge hundreds of dollars because they’re still building their clientele (like me!).

6. Timing is Everything

Many reviewers have a queue of books to read, so timing your request is essential. If your book is about to be released, reaching out three to six months in advance can help ensure that reviews are published around the release date, maximizing visibility. For backlist titles, you might have more flexibility, but being mindful of the reviewer’s schedule can lead to more favorable outcomes, such as featuring your book over a holiday.

7. Be Patient and Respectful

Reviewers are often inundated with requests, and they have their reading preferences and schedules. If a reviewer declines your request or doesn’t respond, don’t take it personally. It’s not necessarily a reflection of your book. Always thank them for their time, even if they don’t agree to review your book. Professionalism goes a long way in the literary community, and you never know when paths might cross again.

8. Engage with Reviews (the Right Way)

When reviews start coming in, engage with them appropriately. If a reviewer posts their review on social media, share it, and thank them publicly. This not only shows your appreciation but also helps spread the word about your book. If the review is critical, avoid the temptation to respond defensively. Take constructive feedback on board and use it to improve future writing. Always keep in mind, that each person has their likes and dislikes, and they don’t always agree.

9. Leverage Reviews for Promotion

Once you’ve gathered some positive reviews, use them as promotional tools. Quotes from reviews can be used on your book cover, in marketing materials, on your website, and in social media posts. Readers are more likely to pick up a book if they see it has been positively reviewed by credible sources. Highlighting strong reviews can be a powerful part of your book’s promotional strategy.

10. Build Long-Term Relationships

Finally, view the process of getting reviews as the start of building long-term relationships. Follow up with reviewers to thank them after a review is published, share their content, and engage with their other reviews or posts. Building a network of supportive reviewers can be invaluable for your future projects. They may be more inclined to review your next book or recommend you to other reviewers, or they may become a part of your beta reader team.
