Every once in a while, I come across a true-crime story that makes my thriller-writer brain stop and think:

If this were fiction, would readers believe it?

That’s exactly what happened with the case of Mackenzie Shirilla.

Before I go any further, though, I want to acknowledge the two young men whose lives were lost.

Dominic Russo and Davion Flanagan were only 20 and 19 years old when they died. My heart and condolences go out to their families, friends, and everyone who loved them.

I’m discussing this case because it raises interesting questions about evidence, perception, unreliable narration, and the way true events can resemble the structure of a thriller. I am not sharing it to sensationalize what happened, minimize their deaths, or turn their tragedy into entertainment.

Two young men lost their lives, and that should remain at the center of the real story.

The Case That Feels Like a Thriller Setup

On July 31, 2022, seventeen-year-old Mackenzie Shirilla was driving a Toyota Camry in Strongsville, Ohio, with her boyfriend, Dominic Russo, and his friend Davion Flanagan inside.

The car reached nearly 100 mph before crashing into a commercial brick building.

Russo and Flanagan were killed. Mackenzie Shirilla survived.

What made the case especially striking was the evidence prosecutors later presented.

According to reporting, the Netflix documentary “The Crash,” and the sources I’ve been reading, data from the car showed the accelerator had been fully engaged for several seconds before impact, with no braking beforehand. It also showed that someone had tried to put the car in neutral and that the emergency brake had been engaged.

Prosecutors argued that the crash was intentional.

They also presented evidence of tension between Shirilla and Russo, including an earlier threat she allegedly made during an argument about crashing a car with him inside.

The defense argued something very different.

Shirilla’s attorneys said the crash was accidental and raised the possibility of a medical blackout related to POTS.

The judge rejected that explanation.

In 2023, after a bench trial, Shirilla was convicted on multiple counts, including murder, and sentenced to 15 years to life in prison.

And that is where my writer brain kicked in.

Because if you turned this basic setup into a fictional thriller?

You would have one fascinating unreliable narrator.

Writer Aha: What If the Main Character Says It Was an Accident?

Imagine opening a novel with a teenage girl waking up after a catastrophic crash.

Two people are dead.

She survived.

She insists she doesn’t remember what happened.

Maybe she says she blacked out.

Maybe she says the car malfunctioned.

Maybe she says she loved the person sitting beside her.

And maybe she believes every word she is saying.

But then the evidence starts arriving.

A surveillance video.

A text message.

A threat from three weeks earlier.

Car data showing no attempt to brake.

A location she may have visited before.

Now the reader has a problem.

Do we believe her?

That’s the kind of tension unreliable narrators are built for.

Why Unreliable Narrators Work So Well in Thrillers

An unreliable narrator does not necessarily have to be lying to the reader.

Sometimes they are lying to themselves.

Sometimes they remember events incorrectly.

Sometimes trauma changes what they can recall.

Sometimes they deliberately leave information out.

And sometimes the reader realizes that the version of events they’ve been given from page one simply cannot be true.

That’s where the fun starts.

For thriller writers, the question becomes:

How long can I let readers live inside one version of the truth before I show them the cracks?

A character might say:

I never meant to hurt him.

But the evidence says:

She made a threat.

She knew the location.

She accelerated.

She never hit the brakes.

Now the reader has to decide whether those pieces prove intent—or whether there is still another explanation hiding underneath them.

That gap between story and evidence creates suspense.

The Netflix Documentary Adds Another Layer

The Netflix documentary The Crash adds another interesting piece to that question of perception.

According to the documentary, viewers see Shirilla crying and receiving support from Dominic Russo’s parents during the aftermath.

That image complicates the story emotionally.

If you were reading this in a novel, that might be the moment designed to make you question everything.

She looks devastated.

People close to the victim appear to support her.

So maybe it really was an accident.

Right?

Then the investigation begins to tell a different story.

That is exactly the sort of contradiction thriller writers use to keep readers off balance.

The emotional evidence says one thing.

The physical evidence says another.

And suddenly the reader no longer knows which version of the character to trust.

A Thriller Writer’s Toolbox: Building an Unreliable Character ✍️

If I were taking inspiration from a setup like this for fiction, these are the questions I’d play with:

What does the character genuinely remember?
Maybe there are missing pieces rather than outright lies.

What does the character want everyone else to believe?
The police? Parents? Friends? The reader?

What evidence contradicts their version?
Texts, videos, timestamps, GPS data, witnesses, search history.

What emotional detail makes us want to believe them anyway?
Grief. Fear. Love. Regret. Trauma.

What secret are they protecting?
And is it the same secret the reader thinks they’re protecting?

That last one is especially fun.

Maybe the character is lying.

But not about the murder.

That gives you another layer of mystery.

The Brave Conversation 💛

True crime can make us want neat answers.

Villain.

Victim.

Motive.

Proof.

Case closed.

Real life is often messier than that.

And fiction lets us explore that messiness without pretending we know what someone was thinking in a real-life case.

That distinction matters.

We can look at the evidence in a real case.

We can look at what prosecutors argued.

We can look at what the defense argued.

But once we start talking about inner thoughts, hidden motives, or what someone “really felt,” we’re stepping into speculation.

That’s where fiction becomes useful.

A novelist can take the type of dilemma and build an entirely new character around it.

What happens when everyone believes you’re innocent?

What happens when the evidence starts proving otherwise?

And what if the person you’ve been lying to most is yourself?

That is a thriller I would read.

This week, I’m reading Where the Bones Took Root by Juniper Klein as part of a book tour with Toppling Stacks Tours.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ — I couldn’t put Where the Bones Took Root down, thanks to its forbidden magic, tangled secrets, and compelling characters. Jayde’s grief and willingness to use blood magic make her a complicated heroine I loved following. Her slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers romance with Barrick hooked me with its embarrassed reactions and accidental touches—tiny moments, big tension! I also enjoyed the banter between Barrick and his brother, the suspicious supporting characters, and the mysterious cult. The magical world, especially the idea of magic as borrowing or stealing from the earth, brought everything together for a five-star read.

So, naturally, today’s survival question is personal.

Because in a thriller, one phone call after dark is bad enough.

But one phone call about …(you know who 😅)?

Why I love this Setup of a Creepy Call

There’s a reason creepy phone calls keep showing up in thrillers and horror stories.

They work.

Think about Scream.

That opening phone call is terrifying because it starts so casually. A girl is home alone. The phone rings. A stranger asks about scary movies.

At first, it almost feels playful.

Then the tone shifts.

The caller knows too much.
The house suddenly feels too quiet.
The phone, something ordinary, becomes a threat.

That’s what makes it brilliant.

A creepy call takes something familiar and makes it unsafe.

We’ve also seen this in stories like When a Stranger Calls, where the terrifying question becomes whether the danger is outside the house… or already inside.

Or Black Christmas, where disturbing phone calls turn a safe, familiar space into something watched, invaded, and deeply unsettling.

Thriller writers use creepy calls because they create tension fast.

There’s no long setup needed.

The phone rings.

The character answers.

And suddenly the story has a pulse.

A creepy call works because it gives the villain control. The caller decides what to reveal, what to hide, when to pause, and when to hang up. The main character is stuck reacting in real time.

It also creates helplessness.

You can hear the voice, but you can’t see the person.

Are they nearby?
Are they lying?
Are they watching?
Do they know something they shouldn’t?

That uncertainty is gold for thriller writers.

The best creepy calls also make the danger personal.

It’s one thing for a stranger to say, “I’m watching you.”

It’s another for them to say, “I know where your sister is.”

Now the main character has to make an impossible choice. Hang up and maybe lose the only clue? Keep talking and risk being manipulated? Tell someone and risk making things worse?

That’s where suspense lives.

Not just in the call itself, but in the decision that follows.

So the next time you’re writing a thriller scene and want to raise the tension, try taking something ordinary — a phone call, a text, a voicemail, a doorbell, a notification — and ask:

What would make this feel wrong?

Because sometimes the scariest moment is not a monster jumping out of the dark.

Sometimes it’s your phone lighting up after midnight.

And you already know you shouldn’t answer.

YA Thrillers to Study for Creepy Messages, Calls, and Clues 📚📱

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
A great example of how interviews, messages, research, and hidden details can pull a character deeper into danger. Pip keeps digging, and every answer creates a bigger question.

One of Us Is Lying by Karen M. McManus
This one is perfect for studying secrets, gossip, and how public information can destroy someone’s life. The tension comes from the fear of exposure.

Ace of Spades by Faridah Àbíké-Íyímídé
A strong example of anonymous threats and messages being used to control, expose, and terrify characters. The unknown sender creates constant pressure.

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Great for studying teen investigators, profiling, danger, and how clues can feel personal. The mystery grows because the characters’ skills pull them closer to the threat.

Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson
This is a good one for writers who like old crimes, strange messages, school settings, and mysteries that connect the past with the present.

I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan
An older YA thriller, but still a classic example of threatening messages. The fear comes from one chilling idea: someone knows what you did.

Sadie by Courtney Summers
This one uses interviews, investigation, and missing-person tension in a powerful way. It’s a great study in how voice, absence, and unanswered questions can build dread.

People Like Us by Dana Mele
A good pick for private-school secrets, anonymous clues, and characters being pushed into dangerous choices.

Tips for Using Creepy Calls, Texts, or Messages in Your Own Thriller ✍️📞

A creepy call, text, or notification works best when it does more than scare the character.

It should change the story.

Here are a few ways thriller writers can use them:

1. Make the ordinary feel unsafe

The scariest part of a creepy call is that phones are normal.

We use them every day.

So when a phone lights up at midnight, or a text arrives from an unknown number, the fear comes from something familiar turning strange.

Try this:

Instead of writing, “The room was scary,” make the phone do something unsettling.

A text from a number that should not exist.
A voicemail with no words, only breathing.
A message that mentions something the character never told anyone.

2. Give the caller information they should not have

This is what makes the reader lean in.

A creepy message becomes much scarier when it is specific.

Not:

I’m watching you.

But:

You always leave your bedroom light on when you’re scared.

Or:

Ask your sister what she hid under the floorboard.

Specific details make the threat feel personal.

3. Use silence

Sometimes the scariest part of a call is not what the caller says.

It’s the pause.

The breathing.

The click before they hang up.

The fact that the character says, “Hello?” three times and no one answers.

Silence gives the reader room to imagine the worst.

And readers are very good at imagining the worst.

Rude of us, honestly.

4. Make the message force a choice

A creepy text should push the character into action.

For example:

Tell anyone, and your sister disappears for good.

Now the character has a choice:

Tell an adult?
Keep the secret?
Record the call?
Follow the clue?
Trust the voice?

That choice creates tension.

The best thriller messages do not just reveal information.

They trap the character between bad options.

5. Let the character react emotionally

A creepy call is not only about the plot.

It is about what the call does to the character.

Do they freeze?
Lie?
Panic?
Pretend they are fine?
Call someone they trust?
Make a terrible decision because they are scared?

That reaction tells us who they are.

A brave character might answer.

A careful character might record.

A guilty character might hide the call.

A lonely character might keep listening because the voice knows something they desperately need.

6. Don’t explain too much too soon

The unknown is doing a lot of work.

The second the reader knows exactly who is calling and why, some of the fear disappears.

So let the mystery breathe.

Reveal one piece at a time.

A strange number.
A distorted voice.
A personal detail.
A warning.
A clue.
A lie.

Then let the reader wonder which part is true.

7. Connect the message to the heart of the story

The creepiest messages are not random.

They hit the character where it hurts.

For this newsletter’s scenario, the line works because it is about a sister:

“I know where your sister is.”

That is instantly personal.

The call is not just scary.

It is emotional.

That is the sweet spot for thrillers: when the danger outside the character connects to the fear already inside them.

📚What I’m Reading

This week I’m sharing “Don’t Print This” by Monica Chin. No creepy calls but most definitely a creepy message:

WE KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU ARE. STOP DIGGING.

Freshman year, Ace Li kissed his best friend, Akash Patel. The next day, Akash moved away without a word―and Ace was so brokenhearted he stopped eating.

It took years for Ace to recover, but he’s finally stable again. Ace drinks his protein shakes, swims every morning, and might even win the debate competition this year. He’s good. He’s forgotten that kiss―at least, that’s what he tells himself. Then Ace hears the news: Akash is back.

Akash has returned because his mother, the world-famous investigative journalist Radhika Malhotra, is missing, and she was last seen in this town. Ace tries to stay away, but the second he sees Akash, the feelings he’s suppressed bubble back to the surface. Then Ace happens upon some notes―notes about what Akash’s mother was investigating. If he retraces her steps, he might be able to find her. And if he does, maybe Akash will give him another chance.

As Ace follows Radhika’s trail, his stable life begins to crumble. He stops eating, and he starts receiving threatening, anonymous messages. If he goes public with what happened to Radhika and why, his entire town will have to pay the consequences. Winning Akash’s heart might cost Ace everything, but maybe that’s a sacrifice he’s willing to make.Would you answer, block it, or record the call?

I liked this but I really wanted more mystery vs. internal love romancy stuff. But it could just be me. Others may swoon over this one. I give it 3.5 stars.

A Writer Challenge

The next time you want to raise tension in a scene, try this:

Take something ordinary — a phone call, a text, a voicemail, a group chat, a notification — and make it feel wrong.

Ask yourself:

What does the message say?
Why does it arrive now?
What does the sender know that they should not know?
What choice does it force the character to make?
What happens if the character ignores it?

Because sometimes the scariest thing in a thriller is not a masked figure in the dark.

Sometimes it is one little buzz from your phone.

And the message:

Answer me. I KNOW what you DID last summer.

📁 THE BRAVE BOOKSHELF CASE FILE

Recently, I read a Fortune article about the AI writing debate, and it made a comparison I can’t stop thinking about.

Apparently, people were worried about WRITING itself way back in ancient Greece.

Yes. Writing.

As in, the thing most of us now consider very normal unless we’re staring at a blank page and questioning all our life choices.

The article explains that in Plato’s Phaedrus, Socrates tells a story about writing being offered as a tool for memory and wisdom. But King Thamus wasn’t buying it. He believed writing would make people forgetful because they would rely on written marks instead of their own memory. In other words, writing could become a crutch. It could make people look wise without actually understanding what they were talking about.

Sound familiar?

That’s pretty much one of the big fears around AI right now.

Will it help us think?

Or will it think for us?

Will it help writers organize their thoughts, plan their posts, and keep up with the business side of publishing?

Or will it create work that sounds polished but has no heart, no lived experience, no weird little human spark?

And honestly?

I get both sides.

I don’t think AI should replace authors.

Full stop.

A book needs a human heart behind it. It needs lived experience, grief, joy, awkward middle school memories, strange family dynamics, bad decisions, coffee-fueled panic, and whatever odd little brain moment makes someone ask, “What if a support app became a kill list?”

That’s not something I want handed over to a machine.

But I also think AI can be a wonderful tool when used responsibly.

And responsibly means responsibly.

I do not think AI should be used to steal from other authors.

I do not think it should plagiarize someone’s work, copy another writer’s voice, or scrape creative work so someone else can pass it off as their own.

That’s not creativity.

That’s stealing.

And honestly, it’s lazy.

There is a huge difference between using AI to help organize your messy thoughts and using it to take from someone else’s hard work.

Know the limits. Know the risks. Don’t pretend bad choices are harmless just because the tool is available.

For me, AI is not writing my books.

It’s not creating the emotional guts of my stories.

It’s not replacing my voice, my characters, my themes, or the scenes I wrestle with until I want to toss my laptop into the nearest lake.

But it does help me with the business side of being an author.

Newsletters.

Social media.

Planning.

Brainstorming.

Organizing the fifty-seven thoughts running around my head like caffeinated squirrels.

And here’s the truth: I don’t have a staff.

I don’t have assistants.

I don’t have a writing assistant.

I don’t have an agent.

And to be honest, I’m not even sure I want one. Agents take a percentage, and I often wonder how helpful they really are unless they’re getting you into one of the big publishing houses. And even then, do we need that path the same way we used to?

Maybe. Maybe not.

That’s a whole other newsletter and possibly a snack-fueled rant for another day.

But as an indie-minded, small press author, book reviewer, podcaster, blogger, mom, ESL teacher, and Behavior Technician, I have to be honest about what I can realistically do.

AI helps me save my writing energy for my books.

Because I’m not one of those writers who wakes up with perfect sentences floating above my head like magical butterflies.

I need help.

I need notes.

I need reminders.

I need something to help me shape the business stuff so I can keep my creative brain for the stories.

And I don’t think that makes me less of a writer.

I think it makes me a writer living in 2026 who is trying to keep up.

📚 In Conclusion: Write Responsibly 😁

The Greek argument about writing made me laugh a little, but it also made me pause.

Because maybe every new tool scares us at first.

Writing scared people.

The printing press scared people.

The internet scared people.

Social media scared people.

Now AI scares people.

And sometimes, the fear is valid. Tools can be misused. They can make us lazy. They can help people fake knowledge they don’t have. They can blur lines that should stay visible.

But tools can also help us.

A notebook doesn’t make me less of a thinker because I write down my ideas.

Spellcheck doesn’t make me less of a writer because it catches the word I misspelled three different ways.

A thesaurus doesn’t steal my voice because I forgot the word I wanted and my brain decided to offer “thingy” instead.

So maybe the real question is not, “Is AI good or bad?”

Maybe the better question is:

Are we using it as a tool, or are we letting it become the author?

For me, that line matters.

There are also ways to use AI more carefully.

You can create private bots.

You can adjust privacy settings.

You can choose what you share and what you don’t.

You can use it as a helper instead of treating it like a ghostwriter hiding in your laptop.

At least, that’s how I see it.

I know not everyone agrees, and that’s okay. This is one of those conversations where I think we need more honesty and less yelling into the void.

Because authors are tired.

Publishers are nervous.

Readers are curious.

And technology keeps changing whether we’re ready or not.

That’s actually one of the reasons I’m drawn to writing thrillers like The Kill App. Technology can help us. It can connect us. It can protect us.

But it can also scare the pants off us when it gets into the wrong hands.

Very on brand for me, apparently.

So here’s my take:

AI should not replace authors.

AI should not steal from authors.

But it can support authors.

It can help us keep up with the parts of publishing that feel impossible when we’re already writing books, reviewing books, recording podcasts, posting online, answering emails, and trying to remember if we moved the laundry from the washer to the dryer.

Spoiler: I probably did not.

What I’m Reading 📚🌴🔪

This week, I’m sharing How the Other Half Dies by P.C. Roscoe, a steamy murder mystery full of rich-kid drama, secrets, scandals, and one tropical vacation that goes very, very wrong.

The story follows Avery, who returns to ultra-exclusive Mokani Island — her so-called happy place — and brings along her college roommate, Nora. Sounds dreamy, right?

Private island.
Rich friends.
Parties.
Ocean views.

Except the vibes are off almost immediately.

Avery’s ex is still hanging around.
Her best friend is acting strange.
A new staff member is watching her a little too closely.
And Nora keeps asking questions no one wants answered.

Which, of course, means everyone is hiding something.

And on an island packed with money, jealousy, family drama, and secrets?

Someone is bound to end up dead.

I gave this one 4 stars.

Overall, I really enjoyed the secrets, lies, twists, and messy vacation-gone-wrong drama. This is the kind of thriller where everyone feels suspicious, everyone has baggage, and paradise starts feeling more like a trap with better lighting.

My only hang-up was that a few moments didn’t fully work for me. Since some of these characters come from very wealthy, powerful families, I expected them to be a little more aware of what was happening in their parents’ lives — especially when arguments and business stress were happening around them.

Avery, for example, seemed surprisingly unaware of why her parents were so stressed, even though she’s supposed to take over the family business someday. Her panic over cheating on a college test felt small compared to everything else happening around her.

That could have been intentional, with certain information held back to make the twists more dramatic, but in a few places it pulled me out of the story.

Still, the rest of the secrets, tension, murder mystery, and island drama worked really well for me.

If you like thrillers with messy friendships, rich-family scandals, love triangles, tropical storms, and people making very questionable choices in beautiful places, this one is worth checking out.

Interview with Shelley Grandy author “Devious Web”

Thank you, Shelley, for joining us, and congratulations on the book!

1. Where do you get your inspiration from?

Mystery has always been the genre I’m attracted to and for my novel I was inspired by things I know well. Those include journalism and tech sector communications based on a long career in those fields, an interest in US politics, curiosity about interpersonal relationships, and a love of horses. The idea for the book percolated in the back of my mind for over five years until I carved out time to write the manuscript in the winter of 2021.

2. Tips or tricks in writing mystery stories?

As a reader of mystery novels, I want books to jump into the action fast while also introducing characters in a compelling way. A writer will engage readers from the get-go if action and character-building coalesce. And, while there are ebbs and flows within any storyline, it’s crucial to create crisis points along the way with the ending being the ultimate payoff.

3. Who’s your favorite character and why? Or how do you develop your characters?

Tom Oliver, the lead character in Devious Web, is my favorite. Tom is a 38-year-old entrepreneur who is ambitious but empathetic, making him the type of CEO his team wants to follow. However, readers have told me their favorite character is Toronto homicide detective Jason Liu who is insightful, with an understated manner and ironic sense of humor. Readers will be happy to know that Liu returns in the sequel that I’m writing now. I picture my characters fully formed—including their personality traits and physical characteristics—which makes it easy to write about them.

4. Do you think setting is just as important as the characters? If so, why, and if not, why?

I do think setting is just as important because characters can’t function in a void. It’s up to the author to provide context of where each ‘scene’ unfolds in a book, with enough color that readers can form a realistic picture of venues and inanimate objects. They don’t want to hear that Tom drives a car, they want to know that he drives a silver Porsche 911 Carrera or that his wife Miriam doesn’t just drink wine, she chooses Baco Noir. We need to experience Tom’s office in a heritage building in downtown Toronto so we can relate to how it feels for a colleague investigating something mysterious there.

5. What is one tip or piece of advice you would give a new writer looking to get published?

Goals, budget, timeline, and determination all factor into a new writer’s approach to getting published. I have a friend who published a children’s book and her goal to see her work in print was satisfied by self-publishing. Others, like me, pitch hybrid publishers with the knowledge that if their book is selected, they will need to contribute financially to the publishing process in return for getting into the market relatively quickly. Still others hope for greater marketing support and take the time and effort to find an agent to represent them to one of the Big Five publishers. Know your target destination and you will figure out the optimal way to get there.

My Review of “Devious Web” by Shelley Grandy

My Rating: ⭐⭐⭐✨ 3.75 stars

Set in Toronto during the summer of 2021, Devious Web follows Canadian tech entrepreneur Tom Oliver, a successful CEO who seems to be sitting at the top of the world. His company is doing well, and he is considering selling it to a Silicon Valley buyer. On the outside, Tom appears to be a well-liked businessman with everything going for him. But when he becomes the target of an unknown perpetrator, it quickly becomes clear that his life is not as polished and secure as it seems.

As danger closes in, homicide detective Jason Liu begins investigating the people closest to Tom. Family members, colleagues, and business associates all come under scrutiny, and the deeper Jason digs, the more tangled the story becomes. Everyone seems to have something to hide, and the question becomes not only who would want to harm Tom, but why.

The book’s back matter compares Devious Web to Gone Girl, The Social Network, and Agatha Christie-style sleuthing, and that combination really does capture the feel of the story. There are the domestic tensions and unreliable motives you might expect from a psychological thriller, the business scheming of a tech-world drama, and the classic mystery structure of sorting through suspects, clues, and hidden agendas. It is the kind of book where you know almost everyone has a secret, but you are not quite sure which secret matters most.

One of my favorite parts of the book was the mystery itself. I really enjoyed the twists and turns, especially as the story revealed more about Tom’s inner circle. The suspense kept building as more pieces of the puzzle came into focus, and I liked that the story did not stay in just one lane. It moved through corporate drama, marriage issues, family conflict, social media, and politics, which gave the plot a wide scope and kept things interesting.

Detective Jason Liu was another highlight for me. I liked his gritty personality and the way he approached the investigation. He has that determined detective energy that works really well in a suspense novel. He is not overly polished or perfect, which made him feel more grounded. In a story filled with businesspeople, family members, and people who may or may not be telling the truth, Jason’s perspective helped anchor the mystery.

The pacing is also strong overall. Devious Web has a bingeworthy quality, especially if you enjoy books with secrets, shifting suspicions, and dramatic reveals. It would be a great choice for readers who like their mysteries mixed with corporate intrigue and family drama. If you enjoy shows like Suits or Succession, especially the parts where ambition, loyalty, and betrayal all collide, this book has a similar kind of appeal.

That said, there were moments when I found myself confused about what was happening. Because there are a lot of moving parts, different relationships, and layers of deceit, I sometimes had to go back and relisten to parts to make sure I understood the connections. The story is definitely packed with information, and while that adds to the complexity of the mystery, it can also make the plot feel a bit tangled at times.

I listened to this one as an audiobook, and the narration affected my experience. Unfortunately, I did not really care for the narrator. His voice sounded robotic to me at times, and there were moments when it lulled me to sleep rather than pulling me further into the suspense. Since thrillers often rely heavily on atmosphere, urgency, and tension, the narration style made it harder for me to stay fully engaged in certain scenes. This may not be an issue for readers picking up the print or ebook version, but it did shape my personal experience with the story.

Even with those drawbacks, I still found Devious Web to be an enjoyable mystery. It was a great read—or listen—while working in the garden, and I appreciated having a suspenseful story with plenty of twists to keep me company. The combination of tech business drama, murder investigation, and messy personal relationships gave the book a lot of energy.

I also liked that the story explored how success and status can hide complicated truths. Tom may be a respected CEO, but the investigation reveals that public image and private reality are not always the same thing. The novel plays with that contrast well, especially in a world shaped by social media, business deals, and personal ambition. Everyone has a version of themselves they want others to believe, and Devious Web keeps asking what might be hiding behind that carefully built image.

Overall, Devious Web by Shelley Grandy is a twisty and suspenseful adult mystery with a strong detective character, plenty of suspects, and a plot full of secrets. While I occasionally had to backtrack to follow the story, and the audiobook narration was not my favorite, the mystery itself kept me interested. Readers who enjoy corporate intrigue, family drama, and layered whodunits will likely find a lot to enjoy here.

With its fast pace, unexpected twists, and web of deception, Devious Web earns 3.75 stars from me. It is a solid pick for mystery and thriller fans who like complicated characters, business-world drama, and a detective who is willing to dig through the mess to find the truth.

1. Tell us about yourself and how you became a writer.

I have been a physician since 2013 and became a mother in 2018 while still in training. I soon realized that many physician mothers were in the same situation, balancing demanding medical careers while raising children. I turned to writing to share my experiences and to help families navigate the highs and lows of parenting while working in healthcare.

2. Where did you get the idea for MOMMY IS HERE! AFTER A LONG DAY AT THE HOSPITAL?

My son was the inspiration for the book. When he started daycare, he began noticing when I left for work and asked questions like, “Why do you have to go?” and “What do you do there?” These moments sparked conversations that made me reflect on my roles as both a physician and a mother.

Your Writing Process

3. How long did it take you to write and illustrate MOMMY IS HERE! AFTER A LONG DAY AT THE HOSPITAL?

The idea first came to me around 2020 after the pandemic, but I decided to make it happen in early 2025. I started drafting the rhyming text, and my husband began creating the characters. By May 2025 we had a complete sketch draft, and by July 2025 we held our first printed copy in our hands.

4. Why did you choose to write a children’s book? Do you have any tips or advice to give someone who decides to write a children’s book?

Children’s books are a wonderful way to spark curiosity, imagination, and conversation with our kids. They are also one of the most meaningful ways to connect emotionally. My advice to aspiring children’s authors is to start as soon as inspiration strikes. Even a few lines or quick sketches on a napkin can take you far. Do not let your idea fade before you begin.

5. What were the challenges you faced in writing your book? How did you overcome it?

Finding time to write has been my biggest challenge as a full-time physician and mother of two toddlers. We actually took vacation time to work on our book and learned that even small steps made during short breaks eventually add up to big progress.

Your Road to Publication

7. So are you Self-Published, Hybrid Published or Traditionally Published? Why did you choose this route of publication?

I am self-published. After researching various options, I decided this route offered the most flexibility. It allows us to work at our own pace without being tied to someone else’s schedule or deadlines.

8. What tips, tricks, or secrets can you give a person about the type of publishing (self, hybrid, traditional) you did?

High-quality printing is a priority for children’s books, but it is important to balance that with cost. We explored several platforms to develop a distribution strategy and found that some offer author copies at lower prices with the same quality. We use those copies for book signing events so we can offer families a discount.

9. If you’re self-published, how did you find your illustrator? Do you share the royalties with the illustrator or did you agree to a flat fee?

My husband illustrated the book. As a physician with a busy schedule, he used digital design tools to help speed up the creative process while keeping our vision consistent.

Marketing

9. How do you market your book? Did you have a marketing plan? If so, what is it?

Did you have a publicist? Tell us the route you took in marketing your book and series.

Yes, we are working with a publicist who specializes in children’s books. We started locally with small reading sessions and author events, and our next focus is visiting hospitals to connect directly with healthcare families. Next year, we plan to expand through collaborations with medical organizations and hospital events.

11. I have several picture book writers who follow my blog and are looking for inspiration and publication. What advice or inspiration could you give these writers?

The best inspiration often comes at bedtime after a long day. Think about what you would like to tell your child or what you would have loved to read as a child yourself. Those are usually the stories that connect the deepest.

When I first held my debut book in my hands, Ask the Girl, I thought the hardest part was over. (Spoiler alert: it wasn’t.) Writing the book was only half the battle—getting it seen was the real quest. As an author published by a small press, I quickly discovered that marketing isn’t just about luck or algorithms—it’s about strategy, persistence, and connecting with readers who genuinely care about your story.

Book reviews became my lifeline. They built credibility, boosted visibility, and—most importantly—helped my book reach readers I’d never have found on my own. But figuring out how to get those reviews? That took trial, error, and a lot of coffee-fueled research. Over time, I turned that learning curve into a blueprint not just for promoting my own work, but for building the foundation of my authorpreneurship—treating writing as both art and business.

If you’ve ever wondered how to land solid book reviews without losing your sanity (or your entire marketing budget), you’re in the right place. Whether you’re self-published, indie-published, or with a small press like mine, these next ten steps will help you attract meaningful, authentic reviews and give your book the boost it deserves.

Let’s dive into the 10 essential steps for landing book reviews to boost your sales—because your words deserve to be read, talked about, and celebrated.

(Please note, as of 1/1/2026, I’ve had to raise my review fee to $50 due to inflation and other expenses.)

1. Know Your Genre and Audience

Before you dive into the world of book reviews, you need to know exactly where your book fits. Understanding your genre is crucial because it determines where and how you should seek reviews. Is your book a chilling ghost story, a heartwarming romance, a gripping YA fantasy, or a middle-grade adventure? Identifying this helps you target the right reviewers who are genuinely interested in your book’s genre. Reviewers who align with your genre will provide more insightful and relevant feedback, which is more likely to resonate with potential readers.

2. Research Potential Reviewers

Not all reviewers are created equal, and finding the right ones requires a bit of detective work. Start by making a list of potential reviewers who specialize in your genre. You can find them through book blogs, Instagram bookstagrammers, Goodreads reviewers, and even YouTube booktubers. Look for those who have reviewed similar books and have a following that matches your target audience. The best way to do this research is hashtags, such as #romance #fantasy #middlegrade #YA / #youngadult on these social media sites.

It’s also important to consider the quality of the reviews they provide. Are they detailed and thoughtful, or are they more surface-level summaries? You want reviewers who can provide meaningful critiques, as these reviews will be more valuable to readers.

3. Check Their Review Policies

Every reviewer has different guidelines and preferences, and respecting these is key to building a good relationship. Most reviewers have a review policy posted on their blog or website. This policy outlines what genres they accept, their preferred book formats (e.g., physical copy, eBook, or audiobook), and how they prefer to be contacted. Make sure you read and follow these guidelines carefully. Ignoring a reviewer’s stated preferences can lead to your request being ignored or, worse, leaving a negative impression. An example is my guidelines, which you can find here.

4. Craft a Personal and Professional Request

When reaching out to reviewers, a generic, copy-pasted message won’t cut it. Personalization is crucial. Start your message by addressing the reviewer by name and mentioning something specific you appreciate about their reviews. Perhaps you loved their take on a book similar to yours or enjoyed their insights into a particular genre.

In your pitch, include a brief synopsis of your book, why you think it would be a good fit for their review style, and any relevant information, such as publication dates or accolades. Keep it professional but warm. Reviewers are more likely to respond positively to authors who come across as genuine and considerate.

5. Be Ready with a Review Copy of the Book

If a reviewer agrees to read your book, be prepared to send them a review copy promptly. Depending on the reviewer’s preference, this could be a physical book, an eBook, or an audiobook. Being flexible with formats can increase the chances of your book being reviewed. Remember, this is an investment in your book’s success, so consider the cost of sending review copies as part of your marketing budget.

Be prepared to pay for a book review. I currently charge $25, which includes reviews on my blog, Amazon profile, Goodreads, and social media.
